Gladys J. Jarrell, age 87, passed away on June 3, 2018 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC. Gladys was born August 3, 1930 in Saluda, SC to the late Inez and George Thomas. Gladys grew up in Greensboro, attending JC Price Elementary and graduated from Dudley High School in 1949. She was a faithful member of Saint James Baptist Church. After graduating, she moved to Paterson, NJ. She joined and became an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She sang in the Gospel Chorus and was a member of the Roberta Johnson Guild. Gladys was a passionate, Certified & Licensed Cosmetologist; this lead to a rewarding Salon Career. She also obtained her Nursing Certification, worked primarily with special-needs children and retired from the New Jersey State Training Center. During these years she married John Ivory Grant. Into their union, Gladys and John welcomed and raised her two nieces Camille and Gwen, with whom she has enjoyed close relationships throughout her life. Years after the death of her 1st husband John, she returned to Greensboro where she cared for her mother until her passing. She met and married Dudley High classmate David Jarrell. In Greensboro, she continued her Cosmetology career and she was a beloved Nanny for a number of families. Gladys, a vivaciously spirited woman, filled her life with travel, fashion, collecting, gaming and many other interests. She was surrounded by a world of friends. Gladys often and affectionately referred to herself as 'The Doll' and others knew her as the 'Diva.' Gladys was predeceased by her parents, her two husbands, her brother Edward Jones and sister Georgia Thomas. She leaves to cherish her memory grand and great-grand nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a host of friendships that she cherished. A service honoring her life will be held Friday, June 8, 2018 at St. James Baptist Church; 531 Florida St. Greensboro, NC. The service will begin at 11 am. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. James' building fund.
