George Norman Smith (aka Goodman and self-proclaim "The Rock") the 4th born of 13 children to the late George and Willar Smith, passed away at age 95 on Friday July 4, 2014 at Wadesboro, N.C. He married Gladys Marie McLaughlin and resided in Greensboro, North Carolina for over 60 years. George was a lifelong member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. He served in the Army of the United States from April 1941 to September 1945. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon and European-African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star. He returned to the states and graduated from North Carolina A&T State University.George was preceded in death by three children; George Norman Smith, Jr.; Gloria Beatrice Smith and Willie Alston Smith and one grandson Willie Alston Smith, Jr. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Hazester Smith of Newport News, VA; Lester Smith of Washington, DC; Curlie Smith and George W. Smith III both of Atlantic City, NJ; two sister: Essie Smith of Greensboro, NC and Roberta Turner of Hickory, NC He leaves to cherish his memories a wife, Gladys Marie Smith; one daughter, Georgiana Smith of Atlanta, GA, God-daughter, Ora Merchant-Hillman (daughter Zion and Zoe). Five sister Marion Spinks, Elizabeth Gregory, Pecolia Harrington, all of Greensbro, NC, Bessie Smith of Winston Salem, NC and Ida Rebecca Turner of Atlantic City, NJ; one brother John Clifton Smith of Candor, NC and a host of nieces and nephews.
