Obituary

George Marshall Murray departed this life on November 5, 2019. He was born January 26, 1937 in Charlotte, NC to the late Isaiah Murray and Almeta Inman Murray. George grew up in Charlotte N.C and received his early education in the public schools, graduating from West Charlotte High School. He briefly attended Johnson C. Smith University on a music scholarship before enlisting in the U. S. Air Force. After four years of service to our country, he enrolled in North Carolina A&T State University where he received his Bacherlor of Science Degree in Sociology. He joined the U.S. Postal Service while he was enrolled as a student. George loved his work. After graduating from A&T, he continued working for the U. S. Postal Service—making it a life-long career. His intellect and strong work ethic resulted in his advancement with the Postal Service, and he served in numerous roles prior to being appointed a Postmaster. George served as Postmaster in the North Carolina cities of Graham, Clemmons, and Kernersville, where he served until his retirement. George loved music. After he and his family joined Providence Baptist Church in 1967, he joined the Sanctuary Choir and was a member for more than thirty years. In addition to singing with the church choir, he was a member of the Spiritual Renaissance Singers of Greensboro, Inc. and sang baritone under the direction of Dr. Patricia Trice. For many years he shared his vocal skill with the community through his participation in the annual presentation of Handel's Messiah. When he was not singing publicly, he was known to spontaneously strikeout in song or play a classical sonata from memory on the piano. George loved plants and the outdoors. He spent many hours grooming his yard, planting flowers and shrubs, and filling his sunroom with ferns and other beautiful indoor plants. He introduced his wife and children to camping and spent many weekends and summer vacations enjoying national and state parks up and down the eastern shores from Canada to Florida in the family's travel trailer. George loved his family. He enjoyed entertaining and celebrating holidays with them in special ways. Each year family and friends alike, eagerly awaited his gift of a special recipe Christmas mix. The Christmas holidays were not complete without his mix. Celebrating family was important to him. He was present at graduations, recognitions and other significant achievements of his family. He looked forward to attending the Murray Family Reunions each summer to reconnect with his sisters, cousins, nieces, and nephews. In a Kernersville News interview during the time he served as the city's postmaster, George was asked about the person he admired the most. He answered, "I would say, my father. He encouraged me to achieve some of the things he was unable to, because of circumstances. He instilled in me the attitude that 'you can if you think you can'- Norman Vincent Peale. That type of attitude stayed with me throughout my life—seek the highest height, whatever goal you set for yourself you can achieve it." George is survived by his wife Connie, a loving family of daughter Stephanie Walker (Craig), son Wendell Marshall Murray, grandsons Wendell Marshall Murray Jr. (Jasmine), Jordan V. Walker (Kelly), Ryan A. Murray, and great-grandaughter Jurnee Murray all from Greensboro, NC; sister Marcella Lindo from Charlotte, NC; Aunt Charlotte Sherman from Conway, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws. A service honoring his life will be held on Saturday November 9, 2019 at Providence Baptist Church; 1106 Tuscaloosa St. Greensboro, NC. Visitation will begin at 1:30pm with service following at 2pm. Burial will be at Lakeview Memorial Park Cemetery.
