A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 29, 2024 at 2 pm in the Cassie-Coote Brown Memorial Chapel 909 East Market Street, Greensboro, NC.
George Pernell Hemingway was born in Bucksville, South Carolina on March 3, 1935, to the late Joseph Thompson Hemingway and the late Charity Brockington Hemingway. He was the youngest of nine siblings who have all preceded him in death. George peacefully entered eternal rest on July 20, 2024, at 4:33 am while surrounded by his wife and only daughter.
George, known to many as Uncle Pup, attended Faith Memorial Elementary School in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He graduated from Howard High School in Georgetown, South Carolina. From there, he joined the United States Air Force where he served four years active duty and four years in the reserve. George was honorably discharged in 1957.
George later went on to attend college at Tennessee State University and then New York University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Throughout his career he worked as a bank teller/supervisor at the Bowery Savings Bank in New York, Mobile Oil Corporation, New York City Government, and as an auditor for the Federal Government. George retired from the Washington, D.C. Department of Health & Human Services as Deputy Controller.
While in Tennessee, George met and married his wife Muriel McAfee Hemingway. They were married for 65 years and to that union they had one daughter, Zeledith Hemingway Blakely.
George loved to fish and travel, especially cruising. He and Muriel began cruising on their 25th wedding anniversary and went non-stop until George became ill. They visited six of the seven continents. He also enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons, mentoring them and taxiing them around to their various extracurricular activities. George was Zeledith's "road dog". When she was not working, George could be found tagging along with her wherever her daily routine would take her (i.e. Wal Mart, yarn stores, ice cream parlors and the like.)
George leaves to fondly cherish his memories his wife Muriel McAfee Hemingway, daughter, Zeledith Hemingway Blakely, two grandsons, Christian Alexander Blakely and George Winston Blakely, two great-grandchildren, Peyton Nichelle and Canaan Alexander Blakely, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
