On Saturday March 25, 2023, at Beacon Place of Greensboro, Mrs. Gaythorn Brunson passed away of natural causes. Gay was born June 23, 1943 in Tabor City, NC to the late Mose and Hattie Lewis. Gay was preceded in death by her husband, parents, 3 brothers, and 2 sisters.

Gay left her small town for the big city life in the 60's. While in Brooklyn, NY, she worked side-by-side with her late husband selling Dudley Products doorto-door. She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church, under Reverend Reed, and sang in the Gospel Choir. Gay relocated her family to Greensboro, NC in the late 80's where she worked various jobs – Parker Brothers as a cashier, sold Dudley Products door-to-door, and housekeeping – while she finished Dudley Cosmetology school. She then worked as a cosmetologist for over 15 years.

After 22 years of dating, she married her late husband John Brunson on February 14, 1998. Gay was the type of mother that cooked a hot breakfast for her kids 6 out of 7 days of the week. She also made sure they attended church and participated in various ways. She opened her home to others when needed and was willing to help when she could. She loved seafood, chicken wings, playing cards, action-packed movies, dancing, doing hair, and spending time with her family and friends.

Gaythorn is survived by her daughters: Antanya Lewis, Sylvia Lewis Hammock (Thomas Hunt) and her son: Anthony Lewis (Robin Shay), all of Greensboro, NC; grandsons: Angelo Harris (Harrisburg, VA), Rodrick Moorehead, Anthony Lewis Jr, Alexander Lewis, Michael Shay, Amos Shay, and William Howard, III, all of Greensboro, NC; granddaughters: Codi Williams-Allen (Brent Allen), Whitney Williams, and Anastasia Sylvia Lewis, all of Greensboro, NC; sister: Odelia Wright and brother: Rudolph Lewis of Brooklyn NY; nieces: Angela Hickling Staines, Rachel and Rebecca Calvert, and Deanna Robinson, all of Brooklyn, NY; nephews: Reggie Lewis (SC), Lamont Lewis, Kevin Wright, Frankie Rover, and Joey Lewis, all of Brooklyn, NY; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
