Obituary

Dr. Gary Louis Lebby went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 28, 2017 following a brief illness. He was born in Charleston, S.C., the youngest of seven siblings to the late Edward Emerson Lebby and Irene Barbara Johnson Lebby. At an early age, Gary, demonstrated a keen interest in math and science. He was an honor graduate of Airport High School in West Columbia S.C. Because of his scholarly talents, he was elected by his school as a representative to South Carolina Boy's State. Dr. Gary L. Lebby received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and physics with a minor in computer science in 1980, his Master's of Science degree in physics in 1982 from the University of South Carolina, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University in 1985. In 1985, he accepted the position of Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and in 1992, he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. In 1994, he was appointed as the Chairperson of the Electrical Engineering Department and in 1996, he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor. In 1998, he was among the few faculty advisors who graduated the first doctoral students from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's newly formed doctoral program. Dr. Lebby directed the Laboratory for Biologically Inspired Energy and Engineering Systems and his research included power systems modeling, artificial neural systems, and parallel distributed processing. During his career, he published over sixty five peer-reviewed articles, supervised twelve doctoral students, and twenty nine master's degree students. Dr. Lebby was a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and a Member of the International Neural Network Society, Sigma Xi scientific research honor society, and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society. Among his honors is an appointment to the North Carolina State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors, and recognition of an Outstanding Faculty Award. He was a founding Member of the Board for charter schools, the Triad Math and Science Academy (Greensboro) and Triangle Math and Science Academy (Cary, NC). Gary was married to the former Kathy Roundtree for 29 years and to that union one daughter, Alexandra Kathryn Lebby was born. Gary never met a stranger. His gregarious laughter was warm and his positive attitude was an inspiration to everyone he encountered. He leaves to cherish precious memories, wife Kathy and daughter Alexandra of the home; brothers: Gerald W. Lebby of West Columbia S.C, Larry F. Lebby (Gloria) and Kenneth B. Lebby, both of Columbia S.C.; paternal aunts: Kathleen Lebby Faust and EddieMae Lebby of Denmark, SC, and GlennaMae Lebby of Hardeeville, SC. A sister-in-law, Mary Lebby, Piny Grove SC, and a formal sister-in-law, Reverend Freddie Mae Lebby of West Columbia; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. In addition to his parents Dr. Lebby was preceded in death by the oldest brother, Robert E. Lebby; only sister, Sandra Lebby, and; younger brother, Michael Lebby. A service honoring his life will be held at Oak Ridge Baptist Church; 2445 Oak Ridge Rd, Oak Ridge, NC 27310 on Thursday, October 5, 2017. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. The burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park; 6000 W Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC 27407.North Carolina A & T State University has established the Dr. Gary Louis Lebby Endowed Engineering Memorial Scholarship. Monetary donations may be made payable to NC A&T Foundation to the Dr. Gary L. Lebby Scholarship Fund and mailed to: University Advancement, 1601 East Market Street, Greensboro, NC, 27411.
