Obituary

Frederick D. Cundiff Sr. of 2214 New Castle Road, Greensboro passed away on Friday, January 8, 2016 at Moses Cone Hospital. Fred was born on February 12, 1926 in Wilkesboro, North Carolina to Ella and Montgomery Cundiff. His parents, along with six brothers and one sister, preceded him in death. A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at Saint James Presbyterian Church at 12:00 o'clock, noon. The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00 noon. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Hyla Bynum Cundiff, "daughter" (niece) Candace Bynum Currence of Mitchellville, Maryland, sons Fred D. Cundiff II and Rod C. Cundiff of Greensboro, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a veteran of World War II with two years of service in China, Burma and India. He had 36 years of experience in public education in North Carolina under the Greensboro City Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. He served as elementary teacher, federal projects director, assistant superintendent, acting superintendent and regional director. Fred held degrees from Winston Salem State University, A & T State University and an education administration degree from UNC- Chapel Hill. He also studied at Ohio State and Wake Forest Universities. He was a member of Saint James Presbyterian Church for 61 years, and served as deacon, trustee, and elder. He was also a member of several professional, civic, and social organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, Greensboro Men's Club, NAACP, National Education Association Board of Directors, SECU, and Alliance of Black Education Administrators. Memorial gifts may be made to Saint James Presbyterian Church.
