Fred Wesley Whitfield, 87, of Greensboro passed away on April 17, 2018 at his home in Charlotte, NC. His funeral will be held on Saturday, April 21st at 11am, with visitation at 10am at Providence Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC. Internment with full military honors will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park. Fred was born September 9, 1930 in Farmville, NC to the late Rosa Lee (Albritton) and Charlie Whitfield. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 32 years of distinguished service. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He loved the Lord and was a faithful servant and member of Providence Baptist Church for over 50 years. At Providence, he served on the Deacon Board, Usher Board, Men's Fellowship, Male Chorus and was a faithful member of Sunday School. He was a loyal, loving, and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and friend. He had a heart for serving and encouraging others whether in need or in passing conversation. His infectious smile, positive attitude and joking personality was uplifting to all that met him. Fred is survived by his wife of 62 years Janol (Corry), two sons, Fred (Mary), Charles (Robin), granddaughter Olivia and grandson Terrance Peterson. Two brothers; Willie (Louise) and Salanda. Four nieces; Vivian Lathen (James), Carolyn Braxton (Melvin), Jacki Williams (Frank) and June Whitfield. Three nephews; Van Whitfield, Billy Whitfield and William Dupree and a host of cousins and close friends.
Fred received a BS Degree in 1955 and a MS Degree in 1960 from A & T State College. He taught band at Bryson High School in Fountain Inn, SC and at Central High School in Hillsborogh, NC. Fred entered the US Postal Service as a clerk/ carrier in the Greensboro facility. In June of 1977, he completed training to become an EEO Counselor/ Investigator in the US Postal Service. Fred retired from the US Postal Service in 1992. He was a dedicated volunteer for Hayes-Taylor Memorial YMCA for over 30 years working diligently to raise funds for its annual campaign. He was honored as Hayes-Taylor Man of the Year in 1986 and 2007 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition, he was the leading fundraiser in efforts to construct the NC A & T State University Aggie Stadium. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Hayes- Taylor YMCA.
