Obituary

Mr. Fernando Moone Cole entered eternal life on Monday, May 14, 2017. Fernando was born in Greensboro, North Carolina on July 17, 2017 and was raised by the late Irene and Albert Moone. He attended Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, NC, Greensboro Public Schools, and graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1971. Fernando married Marinda "Kay" Cole and through their union had one daughter, April Murray. Fernando became employed with the City of Greensboro before his 20+ years with Southern Foods. At the time of his transition, he was employed at Guaranteed Supply Co.. Fernando Cole devoted over 30 years to coaching young men from Greensboro and surrounding communities. His career started in the early 90's coaching recreational teams for the YMCA and Greensboro Parks and Recreation. His love of basketball and devotion to student athletes led to him becoming a high school assistant coach. He coached high school basketball for over 10 years during the school year and coached Athletic Amateur Union (AAU) basketball during the spring and summer months. Highlights of his coaching career include coaching for several AAU organizations; being an assistant coach with Reggie Peace in two high school state championship games (Ben L. Smith, 1994 and Lee County, 2004); and coaching several Gator AAU state championship teams and national championship teams. He invested his time, basketball knowledge, resources, energy, and mentorship into helping young men use basketball to develop the work ethic, discipline, and integrity needed to succeed in life. He was known for his straightforwardness and "tough love" approach. To Fernando, coaching meant being a role model and a friend. He maintained lifelong relationships with many of the young men he coached as well as their families. His legacy and love for the game will never be forgotten by his fellow coaches and the young men whose lives he touched. Fernando is preceded in death by his Parents, Albert and Irene Moone; Mamie Moone; and one brother, Vernel Kirby.
