Obituary

Mrs. Evelyn Louise Atkins of Greensboro, NC, departed this life on Friday, October 30, 2020 at Moses Cone Hospital. She was born November 26, 1951 in Madison, WI to the late Edward Gene and Rose Abernathy.

Evelyn graduated from high school in Madison, WI and attended University of Wisconsin Madison for two years. After her marriage to Ira Atkins, she relocated to Oakland CA where she was employed by AT&T. During her employment with AT&T, she earned a Bachelors Degree. After 30 years of service, she retired from AT&T and relocated to Greensboro, NC.

Evelyn was also employed by Peeler Elementary School in Greensboro, NC. She completed her Masters Degree from University of North Carolina Greensboro while working at Peeler Elementary School. Evelyn was a strong advocate for students having a good education. She always stressed the importance of education. She also encouraged young people to do their best and always display good character.

Evelyn was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC under the tutelage of Bishop Brooks. She also enjoyed fellowshipping with the members of Wells Memorial Church Of God In Christ and Emmanuel United Church Of Christ.

Evelyn enjoyed planting flowers and in her free time, she enjoyed tutoring, inspirational reading, videos, and exercising.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 50 years, Ira Atkins of Greensboro, NC; a brother, Ex Marine Rodney Abernathy of Madison, WI; and Nieces and Nephews of Madison, WI; two Godsons, Robert W Jenkins and Todd N Thorpe of Greensboro, NC; and a host of relatives and friends.

A memorial service honoring Evelyn's life will be held at a later date in Madison, WI.
