Obituary

Eugene Hunt Sr. was born on February 4, 1931 to the late Beamon and Nettie Burgess Hunt and departed this life on January 1, 2020. He attended John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, NC. After finishing school, Eugene came to Greensboro where he met his wife, Mamie Elizabeth Williams of 63 years. From this union they had four children, Sharon Denise, Sheryl Diane, Eugene Jr and Jonathan Douglas Hunt. He spent 30 years of service with Greensboro Manufacturing where he was the first black certified mechanic for the company. Later, after the company closed, he worked as a custodian at NC A & T State University for 10 years before he retired. After which he started his own cleaning company and cleaned for various small business owners in the city. Helping and protecting his family, friends and neighbors was something he prided himself on. He was in charge of the neighborhood community center and would always attend every event held in the center to ensure everyone was following the rules and there were no wrong doings going on. He would frequently ride through the neighborhood of Greenfield doing his own patrolling to make sure everything was okay and in order. Eugene was given the nickname of "Mayor of Greenfield" because of his love for his community. He enjoyed planting his garden every year and loved watching it grow and reaping the benefits of fresh vegetables. Family meant the world to him. His children/grandchildren were always the center of his existence. He was their transporter when they needed a ride to/from school or to work and they always knew if he didn't answer his phone in the morning, they knew to call him at McDonalds because the workers at McDonalds knew him and would deliver their message, he transported his neighbors to their medical appointments or ran an errands for them if they were unable to drive, or just sitting out on his front porch waving at folks and talking to anyone who came on the porch to talk. He even was caught a few times driving pass his daughter's homes to make sure everything was all right with their property while they were at work. Hunting for small game and deep-sea fishing was also a hobby he enjoyed. He never missed an opportunity to visit with his parents. His love for small game hunting always took him back home to Warrenton where he and his friends would hunt on his parents' property and later enjoy the meal his mom would prepare for them when they would return from the hunting. The annual Family Reunion was truly a tradition he truly loved always participated in up until recently when his health would not allow him to enjoy the festivities as before. He always remembered there was 13 brothers and sisters and all of them were still living as far as he knew because he had not received a phone call telling him that one of his siblings had died. Before he passed, I reminded him of this and told him I guess he wouldn't be getting the phone call about one of his siblings passing because the phone calls his siblings would get would be about him. He smiled and nodded in agreement. His willingness to help out, tell a funny joke or just say something to make you laugh will truly be missed. Memories are left to his daughters: Sharon Denise Hunt-Jones, Sheryl Diane Hunt, sons: Eugene Hunt Jr., and Jonathan Douglas Hunt (Kimberly), grandchildren: Phenecia Johnson (Troy), Selina Hunt, Dominique Hunt, Austin Hunt, Cody Hunt, Taylor Hunt, and great grandchildren: Kendall Hunt, Aiden Hunt. Surviving siblings: Lucy Brown(Ohio), Beaman Hunt Jr(Devella) Oklahoma, Columbus Hunt (Pearl), Cleveland Ohio, Bernard Hunt (Lorretta), Pittsburg Pennsylvania, Coate' Richardson, Cleveland Ohio, Nello Carter, Raleigh, NC, Thearl Hunt, Zebulon, NC, Conrad Hunt(Viola), Cleveland Ohio, Salonia Johnson (Melvin), Wake Forest, NC and Shirley Johnson, Wake Forest, NC, along with a long host of nieces, nephews, great nieces/nephews, cousins and close family friends. Visitation will begin at 11:30am with service following at 12pm.
