Obituary

Esther quietly went into eternal rest at 7:47 a.m., July 29, 2014. Eighty-three (83) years ago in the district of Grey Wood, Blackstonedge, St. Ann Jamaica, Esther Alyne Coward was born to Eva Eliza Gilbert and Gladstone Coward. Esther was one of nine (9) children, three (3) of whom preceded her in death. Those were her brother: Sonny Coward and sisters: Esmine Barnett and Norma Johnson. She is survived by her only son: Clive (Beres) Bennett and grandson: Jordan. Other remaining survivors are her siblings: Edna Rose (Pearl), Fay Johnson (Birdy), Rose Anderson, Derrick Johnson (Marcia) and Joan Lemond (Patsy), as well as, many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friend Benny Richardson. As a young woman in Jamaica, Esther worked for many years with Dr. Ivan & Dr. Rose Parboosingh. From there she migrated to White Plains, N.Y. where she worked for approximately twenty-two (22) years as a nursing assistant. At St. Agnes she worked on the cardiac unit and from time to time incarcerated patients would be brought in under police guard and it was her job to professionally give tender loving care to these inmates. In her White Plains years, she loved to read and she had a passion for shopping. There was a clique of them (the main players being Viola, Evelyn, Linda and Elaine). When any of their favorite stores had a good sale, they would be at the door of that store when it opened. They would take their time to rummage through every rack and every shelf looking for the best deals. They would break for lunch after spending all day shopping, their bodies would literally ache, forcing them to return home to soak in the hot tub, have dinner, and call friends to talk about their deals. When Clive was at White Plains High School he played the positions of Wide Receiver & Safety on the Varsity Team. Esther developed a love for the game, and never missed a chance to cheer her son on, while wrapped in her blankets, and dressed like an Eskimo with her flask of hot chocolate. Esther's deepest love was for her son Clive and her grandson Jordan. Her next move was to Miami, Florida where she and Pearl lived together. While in Florida, one of the most satisfying activities was the weekly Bible Study in the home she shared with Pearl. Since they went to different churches, Pearl had her own weekly Bible Study. One of her biggest heart breaks was leaving her Bible Study group behind in Florida. Everyone who knew our Esther loved her, and we take courage in the fact that she came to know and accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. We can only pray that all of us who were so loved by her will follow her example. We know and believe that we will meet her again someday.
