Esther Beatty Alexander, born June 8, 1922 in Cairo, Illinois to Dr. and Mrs. Webster Barton Beatty, died on May 20, 2015, at home in Greensboro, attended by her two daughters, Robin and Karen.She was educated in Cairo and at Fisk University (B.A., Music, 1943) (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority), at A&T State University (M.A., Education, 1956), and at Temple University, Eckerd College and Appalachian State (Reading Specialist Certification, 1972).She married Harvey Alexander of Georgetown, IL on December 19, 1943 and, accompanied him through several stateside postings during World War II. She taught in Cairo and Mounds City, IL public schools from 1945 to 1950. She and Harvey settled in Greensboro with their daughters in 1951 where she served as Director of Music and Choral Arts at the Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia. In 1954 she joined the Greensboro Public School System teaching at Washington Street Elementary, at Lincoln Junior High, and then at junior and senior high schools in Charlotte. Eventually the couple moved to Nashville, TN and she became Director of the Reading Lab at Columbia State Community College. In 1988 she and her husband retired and returned to Greensboro where they built their dream home in which she lived the rest of her life. They resumed their membership at St. James Presbyterian Church which they had joined in 1951. In retirement, she performed volunteer intake service at the Greensboro Urban Ministries.Esther Alexander was predeceased by her beloved husband of 70 years. She was deeply loved and will be fondly remembered by her daughters, Robin Alexander of Washington, DC, and Karen Alexander of Greensboro, and her nephew, Robert D. Brown (Annie) of Silver Spring, MD; her grandchildren Tanya Smith (Roman) of Clinton, MD, Rodney Turner (Naomi) of Centreville, VA, and Esther Turner (Thomas Steinfeldt) of Norfolk, VA; and great-grandchildren Aundrea and Mia Turner of Centreville, VA, Xavier and Zuri Smith of Clinton, MD, and Rodney Thomas Steinfeldt of Norfolk, VA, and many other family members, friends, associates, and former students.
