Estelle Waddell Tatum transitioned to her heavenly home on Tuesday, August 26, 2014. She was born July 12, 1918 to the late Alfred H. Waddell and the late Bessie Johnston Waddell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lester Benton Tatum, and her sisters, Sarah W. Foushee, Armetta Keith, amd brother, James Chester Waddell. Estelle is a 1935 graduate of James B. Dudley High School and a 1940 graduate of Bennett College. She was actively involved with both the Dudley Alumni and the Bennett Alumnae Associations. Her first teaching job was in the Catawba County School System. Later she returned to Guilford County and taught at Laughlin and Stokesdale Elementary Schools. She was the first teacher of color to join the faculty. She retired from the Guilford County School System in 1980. She was an active member of Union Memorial United Methodist Church for a lifetime. She was a Lay Leader, a member of the Outreach Ministry, member of the United Methodist Women, Tuesday Fellowship, and Co-founder of the Church Day Care Program to name a few. Estelle was a member of Eta Phi Beta Society, Retired Teachers Association, Friendly Seniors Bowling League, Eastside Community Club, and the Ole Asheboro Street Neighborhood Association. Left to Cherish her precious memories are: Daughter, Kimberly Pass (Samuel); sons, Lester Tatum, Jr. (Gail), Ronald Tatum (Denise), five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Mable Smith Hockaday, of Fayetteville, GA and two brothers of Greensboro, Alfred C. Waddell (Peggie) and Gilbert A. Waddell (Cora). She is loved and admired by all of her family. Estelle played a major role in the positive development of her siblings, nieces and nephews. There are two special nieces she considered as daughter, Ruth Goldston (Henry) and Doris Smith (Eugene) of Atlanta, GA.
