Elreta Naomi Johnson transitioned into eternal life on February 3, 2014. She was born July 31, 1923 in Sumter, South Carolina to be the first of six (6) children to the late Fred Harvin and Marie Richardson Johnson Harvin.
Elreta attended and graduated from Morris College High School, Sumter, South Carolina and also graduated from Morris College, Sumter, S.C. with a B.S. degree in Education. As a teenager she was a member at Emmanuel United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and attended Sunday school. She moved to North Carolina where she taught early childhood education in the Greensboro school district.
Elreta became a member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church where she met and married James E. Harvin. At Trinity her organizational affiliations were the Sanctuary Choir, Cecil Bishop Club, Sunday School and Bible Study.
She was a former member of the Senior Usher Board, Stewardess Board No. 1 and served in many other capacities; always, with a smile. She was a faithful servant as demonstrated throughout her day to day life.
Elreta retired from the State of North Carolina. She was formerly employed at Guilford College, Greensboro, North Carolina and the Sheltered Workshop in Greensboro. She received numerous awards and certificates honoring her during her service to the State of North Carolina.
Elreta was preceded in death by her loving husband, James E. Harvin; brothers: Edward Johnson and Roland Johnson. She is survived by five (5) sons: James Wendell Harvin, Glen Kay Harvin (Phyllis), Douglas Edward Harvin, Gilbert Brent Harvin and Bruce Anthony Harvin, all of Greensboro, North Carolina. She leaves a host of memories and life lessons to her treasured grandchildren who will miss her dearly.
Elreta will be remembered fondly by her surviving siblings, sisters: Annetta Osborn of Brooklyn, New York; brothers: Charlie (Carrie) Johnson of Washington, D.C. and the Reverend Franklin (Elizabeth) Johnson of Charleston, South Carolina; a host of nieces; nephews; family and friends who will miss her immensely.
A special sister: Janice Harris will always be as her "Sister." What a life of growing up together with Mom & Dad.
