Elmer E. Shamberger was born November 27, 1930 in Robbins, North Carolina. He was raised by his grandparents, the late George and Lula Shamberger. His transition to eternal rest occurred on December 13, 2017. After graduating from Pinckney High School, Elmer was drafted into the United States Army. While serving for thirty three years, he received numerous awards and honors. He retired with the rank of Sergeant Major E9. Surprisingly, Elmer also worked as a computer programmer and ran a grocery store during this time. Elmer was an active and devoted member of Trinity A. M. E. Zion Church. After uniting with the church in 1965, under the care of the late Bishop Cecil Bishop, he began to work diligently. Elmer was a member of the November Birthday Calendar Club and the Young Men's Progressive Club. Even though ill and unable to attend services, he never forgot the church. Elmer supported it financially and spiritually. A member of both the Gospel and Men's Choirs, Elmer was often a soloist. His rich and beautiful voice will be missed by many. Elmer Shamberger was a valued member of the Greensboro Community. He was a kind and generous man. He was kind to his neighbors, friends, customers and, family. Elmer Shamberger helped people. He will be remembered by many. He was preceded in death by his brother, Theodus Maness, and sister, Lorraine Jones. To cherish his precious memory, he leaves his wife of sixty five years, Katie, and three children Jeffery E. Shamberger, Teresa Douglas (Andre) and, Angela S. Milliken (Jasen). He leaves grandchildren, Toran Shamberger, Andre Douglas, Kyle Douglas, Ivan Milliken, Nicholas Thacker and, Kaitlyn Johnson. He also leaves great grandchildren, Hydeia Mims and Amiya Douglas. Elmer is survived by brothers Ezell, Ronzell, Lacy and, Anthony. His sisters, Elnora, Mildred and, Pricilla also survive. Two sister in-laws, Mae Frances Maness and Arlene Maness, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and, friends are left to mourn their loss. He will be also missed by his special friends, Larry Jamison, Percy Darden and, Frank Goins.A service honoring his life will be held at Trinity AME Zion Church; 631 East Florida Street, Greensboro, NC 27406 on Monday, December 18, 2017. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 11:30 am. The interment will take place following the service at Guilford Memorial Park; 6000 West Gate City Boulevard Greensboro, NC 27407.
