Edward Hayes Miller was born in Greensboro, NC, December 27,1939 to the late Samuel and Mary Miller. He departed this life at his home Sunday, July 22, 2018 following a lengthy illness. He was the youngest of nine children, and attended school in the Greensboro City School System. 'Whistle', as he was lovingly known, married Iola Manuel, his wife of 61 years. There were nine children born to this union: Felicia Ann, James Edward, Rodney 'Ron' (Amy), Mary Ann, Freddie (Lisa), Wanda (Don), Keith (Lisa), Tonya and Eric (Lekesha), all of Greensboro, NC. Whistle worked for Republic Services as a dedicated employee for 41 years, retiring in 2010. He was recognized for outstanding service in teamwork, commitment, and customer service. Serving as Senior Deacon at Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, his love for God, respect for his church and church family was evident by his service. Deacon Miller taught New Members Class, assisted with Sunday School, served on the usher board, drove the church van, and helped maintain the church facility. He was loved and respected by the Gethsemane family. Christmas was his favorite holiday. He looked forward to the tradition of blessing each of his grandchildren with a special Christmas envelope from granddad. He would do whatever he could to help others, probably even giving the shirt off his back to enhance the lives of others. If he couldn't help, he would find someone that could. He stood in the gap for some of the neighborhood children whose fathers were deceased or absent. He used his life experiences and testimony to impact the lives of his family and everyone he encountered. He was preceded in death by: one son; Christopher, one brother; Johnny Miller, three sisters; Ernestine Dark, Polly Gilyard and Lula Bowden. Left to enjoy his memories are his wife Iola, his nine children, 21 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild, one sister, Betty Stewart and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A service honoring his life will be held Saturday, July 28, 2018 at Gethsemane Baptist Church; 3701 Heath St. Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 N O' Henry Blvd. Greensboro, NC.
