Mrs. Delores M. Johnson died on Wednesday, June 7, 2017. Delores was born in Statesville, North Carolina, on August 1, 1947 to the late Onever McDowell and John B. Clemmons. Delores attended Iredell County Public Schools and graduated with honors in 1965. She then entered Livingstone College in Salisbury and received a Bachelor's Degree in English. She later obtained a Master's Degree in Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Delores was a devoted public-school teacher for many years before accepting a position with AT&T. After 18 years with AT&T, she retired as a Purchasing Manager in 1998. She then returned to her alma mater to be Director of Alumni Affairs. After serving for several years as an officer, she was elected President of the Livingstone College National Alumni Association in 2015. As President, she was also a member of the Livingstone College Board of Trustees. If one had to summarize Delores' character in two words those would be leadership and service. Throughout her career she volunteered to serve in leadership and support roles with community youth programs including Community in Schools, Lunch Buddies and reading programs. Through it all she carried a passion for her beloved alma mater, Livingstone College. She was an active coordinator for her graduation class, "The one of a Kind Class of '69". Her class repeatedly earned the top award for raising the most money for the school during their anniversary years. Delores' consuming passion was tennis; she loved traveling and thoroughly enjoyed reading and discussing books with members of the "Word Sisters Book Club". She is survived by her husband of 32 years, David Johnson; one brother, Renard McDowell (Statesville); stepsons Paul Johnson (Maria), Christopher Johnson (Kim), and one grandson, Korey Johnson, (Atlanta, GA); nephew Lamont McDowell (San Diego, CA), niece, Kimberly Gibbs, and grandniece Katelyn (Atlanta, GA); an aunt, Gloria Costella Thompson and special cousin Kathy Lackey (Statesville); and a host of family and friends. A service honoring her life will be held at Trinity AME Zion Church; 631 E Florida St, Greensboro, NC 27406 on Monday, June 12, 2017. The visitation will begin at 12:30 pm and the service will follow at 1:00 pm. The interment will take place at Belmont Cemetery in Statesville, NC on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, beginning at 12:00 pm.
