Daphine Holden Peoples was the second oldest of ten children born to Willie Issac Holden and Lennie Rogers Holden in Wendell, NC on February 17, 1938. She was called to eternal rest on January 20, 2019 at the age of 80.
Daphine grew up on a family farm in Wendell, NC. Being the second oldest child she would learn early on the skills of hard work, helping her parents farm tobacco and cotton. She learned a love of cooking from her mother and one of her other early tasks was to help cook family meals. Daphine was an avid athlete in high school where she played basketball as a star defender. She graduated from Shephard High School in 1955 and attended college at Central University were she graduated in 1959. She would work in New Jersey for a short time before returning to North Carolina to start work first at Guilford Child Development and then at NC A&T State University were she would retire as an Administrative Assistant to two different Deans in the Animal Science Department.
In 1962 Daphine married Herman Peoples on June 30th at her family's farm in Wendell, NC. They were married for 56 years. Daphine and Herman have one daughter, Katrina Peoples.
'Phiney' as she was known to her family and friends always had a home filled with hospitality, welcoming all those who came to visit with joyful conversation and always an invitation to share in a home cooked meal. She and her late husband demonstrated such hospitality by hosting an annual Thanksgiving feast for more than 40 years.
Her life was lived family centered, being a reliable source of support for her siblings and extended family including dear friends that had become her family. She would always remark by saying , "My mother asked me to help out my sisters and brothers behind me and that's what I did."
Daphine enjoyed keeping in touch with family and friends by always sharing a lighthearted phone conversation or mailing out a birthday card. Never losing her athletic competitive spirit, she was an avid sports enthusiast with her favorite sport to watch being basketball. She will be missed for her kindheartedness, jovial sensibility, a devotion to keeping in touch with those she loved, conversations on politics and current events, and her stylishness.
Daphine is survived by her daughter Katrina Peoples of Greensboro, NC; Sisters: Dayola Perry (Elmer) of Lake Lure, NC, Betty Hudson (Will) of Raleigh, NC, Linda Hillian (Fred) of Greensboro, NC, Joyce Johns of Raleigh, NC and Sylvia Solomon also of Raleigh, NC; Brothers: William Holden (Eddie) of Raleigh, NC and James Holden of Greensboro, NC; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. Daphine was predeceased by her brother Richard Holden, Sr.
A service honoring her life will be held Saturday, February 9, 2019 in the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home; 909 E Market St. Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 N O'Henry Blvd. Greensboro, NC.
