Daniel Lee McDonald, 87, was called home on Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Daniel, Dan, or Mr. Mack, as he was known, was a lifelong resident of Greensboro, born July 10, 1932 the son of the late Daniel and Georgia McDonald. He was always quick to share that he grew up (and spent his early adulthood) on Willow Road. A graduate from James B. Dudley Senior High School (class of 1950), he enjoyed reminiscing about his days as a bus driver. He also attended NC A&T State University and took pride in being a member of the Blue and Gold Marching Machine. Dan worked a variety of jobs in his youth, and truly found his "calling" when he joined the Greensboro Police Department. He often recalled experiences working on the police force during the turbulent 60s and the civil rights movement. During his tenure, he was promoted to Detective. He always identified as a former police officer even long after he began another career with HUD as a Fair Housing Investigator. Obviously, investigating was "in his blood." As a young man, Daniel fell in love with Bennett Belle, Christene McGimpsey McDonald. They married and, together, had a son, Darrell and daughter, Dana. Dan and Chris shared a devoted and committed family life until her passing in 2011. He missed his beloved every day until he joined her in their Heavenly home. Dan was a longtime member of Trinity AME Zion Church where he sang in the choir. Quite the people-person, he was very active in the community, often serving in PTA roles at Lincoln Junior and Dudley Senior High Schools as well as serving on community boards. Dan never met a stranger; never forgot a face or name; and did not enjoy anything more than a "good visit." Daniel is survived by his son Darrell Henry (Carolyn) McDonald; his daughter Dana Georgette McDonald; grandchildren, Dalen Christian McDonald, Danielle Oleana McDonald, and Kelsey Soren Mann; great grandson, Elijah Gaskins; sister-in-law Erma McGimpsey as well as a host of nieces and nephews . He is preceded in death by his wife, Annie Christian (Christene) McGimpsey McDonald and sister, Lillian McDonald Harley.
A service honoring his life will be held Monday, February 10, 2020 at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church; 631 E. Florida St. Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12 noon. The interment will take place following the service at Carolina Biblical Gardens; 5710 Riverdale Drive, Jamestown, NC 27282.
