Obituary

Mr. Daniel Marshall Horton, 92 years old, transitioned from his earthly life to eternal life on November 17, 2023.

Daniel was born on October 15, 1931, in Morehead City, North Carolina, to the late Curtis Henry and Ada Becton Horton. He was the youngest son of seven boys and two daughters. After graduation from high school, Dan entered North Carolina Teacher's College (Winston Salem State University) where he majored in education and where he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he was a member of the Army band. Upon his discharge from the military, he accepted an invitation to teach with the Columbus County School System in the Mt. Olive Community. Dan was a passionate educator, utilizing the skills and principles learned in the army as he taught language arts, social studies, music, performance, and marching bands. His last position before retiring was that of a Career Guidance Counselor in Eden, NC.

While teaching in Columbus County, Dan's principal introduced him to a fellow educator, a young lady who would change the course of and become the love of his life, Peggie Annette Smith. Following a whirlwind romance and courtship, Dan and Peggie were married and enjoyed over 65 years of loving wedded bliss. To this union was born a son and two daughters. The children are all respected professionals in their individual fields.

Dan always put family first and was a dedicated husband, father, and spiritual beacon for his family. Everyone who knew Dan, knew that he was devoted and committed to the service of the Lord as a member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church Gospel and Chancel Choirs. He was also a much sought after bass soloist in "The Big Red Machine" Gospel Choir. He was the man behind the scenes who often coordinated the trips the choir took and was available to handle whatever needed to be done. Dan remained a faithful and dedicated member of St. Matthews from 1969 until his death.

God blessed Dan with many years beyond the promise.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Curtis Henry Horton and Ada Becton Horton; brothers, Cecil, William, James, Leary, Floyd, and Jasper; sister, Henrietta (Henderson); and sisters-in-law, Mary, Alease, Dorothy, Virginia, and Miriam.

Sadly, but with the spirit of God's divine grace, he leaves to mourn, his faithful and loving wife, Peggie; son, Keith Marshall Horton (Vivian); daughters, Sharon Horton-Jenkins (Robert) and Tonya L. Horton; grandchildren, Devon Alexander Horton and Benjamin Nicholas Horton; bonus grandchildren, Ryan Keith Jenkins and Robert Lance Jenkins; bonus great-granddaughter, Brittany Micah Jenkins (Scott); sister, Barbara Hill (Floyd); brother, John Jasper; sisters-in-law, Gertrude "Trudi" Whittle and Odessa Horton; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
