Crawford James Jones departed this life on October 7, 2015. He was the only child of Ethel and Crawford Jones Sr. He was born on February 12, 1933 in Reidsville, NC. Crawford graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Reidsville, NC. Upon graduation he matriculated to J. C. Smith University, Charlotte, NC. While there he excelled in Football, Basketball, and was Captain of the Track Team. He completed his college education, receiving his B.S. Degree. Upon his graduation he married his college sweetheart, Cecelia Donnell Jones. The couple moved to Greensboro, NC. The Greensboro Fire Department had announced a decision to hire Negro Fire Fighters. Crawford saw this as an opportunity to get a job, since he was unsuccessful in his job searches. He applied for a position, and along with other applicants was hired as one of the "Original Negro Fire Fighters". He was put in training and successfully completed that in 1961. .He was honored in 1963 by The Greensboro Junior League as "Greensboro Fire Fighter of the of Year". In 1964 the "Greensboro Sertoma Club" honored him as "Outstanding Young Firefighter". Crawford was a member of St. James Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Trustee Board, serving two consecutive terms; he also served as member of the Finance Committee. He was a member of the Greensboro Exchange Club; a member of Elks Lodge; and Table Tennis Club. Crawford loved people, and was always doing something to help others, in any way he could. Crawford retired from the Fire Department in 1996, prior to his retirement he and his wife moved to Pleasant Garden, NC. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years; Cecelia Donnell Jones, two sons Crawford David Jones, (Greensboro, NC), Carlton Steven Jones(Rogerline) Raleigh, NC; three granddaughters, Christina Quick(Dontrell), Virginia, Beach, Va. ,Chelsea Jones, Greensboro, NC,and Ciara Jones(Raleigh) NC, one great-granddaughter, Caitlin Kerr, Virginia Beach, VA, Two Great- Grandsons , Landon and Aden Quick, Virginia Beach VA, Sister in law, Brenda D. Sallley( Luke) of Fayetteville, NC..
