Coy Dexter Smith, known to his family and friends as Dex, was born on March 26, 1955, at the old L. Richardson Hospital to Annie B. Davis in Greensboro, North Carolina.

He graduated from Southeast High School in 1973 and was a member of Beaulah United Church of Christ. After working thirty-three years as a machine operator at Carolina Loom and Reed he retired in 2013. His retirement did not stop him from enjoying life.

He enjoyed going to Piedmont Drag Strip for Big Dog events with his daughter Chantel. In the late 1970s, he occasionally raced his 1970 Duster at Piedmont for fun. Throughout the years, Dex always enjoyed working on his cars, including swapping out motors to make them faster. He also enjoyed a good card game of Poker and Tunk that could last all night into the next morning.

Dex was preceded in death by his brother, William "Bugga" Smith and his uncle, Jack Smith.

His devoted life will forever be cherished in the lives of his wife, Marilyn Smith; daughters: Tonya Ward (Gary) of Browns Summit and Chantel Smith of Greensboro; grandchildren: Chasity Smith of Greensboro, Coy and SaCoya Ward of Browns Summit; brothers: Terry Smith (Judy) of Milton, Pennsylvania, Darrell Davis (Sandra) of Tampa, Florida, Dwayne Davis and Dwight Davis (Doris) of Greensboro; sisters: Kim Davis of Haw River and Gail Davis (Rembert) of Greensboro, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and long-time childhood friend, Sherman Martin.
