Obituary

Clifton Hugh Lloyd Sr. was born on December 17, 1932 in Rocky Mount North Carolina and peacefully departed this life on Thursday, October 2, 2014. Â He was the third child of Aaron (deceased) and Fannie (Stalling) Lloyd (deceased), with two older sisters Jessie Lloyd, Electric Lloyd Winston and younger sister Vivian Lloyd (deceased)

He graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount in 1951 and enlisted in the United States Marines Corp.

After being honorably discharged in 1954, he used the GI bill to enroll in North Carolina A&T State University, from whence he graduated on December 5th, 1957 with a degree in Music Education in 3 years.Â

In 1957 he moved to Augusta Georgia and taught for a while at the local high school, where he met and married Lila Garrett in 1959. From their union, two sons were born, Clifton Lloyd, Jr. (deceased) and William Penn Lloyd.

After leaving Ga. he taught in Maryland before returning to N.C. where he spent the remainder of his career as the Band Director teaching in Chatham Co. School System in Siler City.

He would later pursue his post-graduate studies at North Carolina Central University, from where he graduated in May of 1968 with a Masters in Music Education.

The measure of this manâ??s life will show, that he was genuinely good and decent.  He was quiet with a strong presence.   His words were few, but unforgettable.Â

If you ever had the pleasure to sit with him for a while, you would come to know of his challenges and treasures.  He grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina with his parents and three sisters, served his country, and taught children how to appreciate music.  He married Lila and loved her for over 50 years.  He raised his sons and was blessed with the time to watch them grow into men he could be proud of.  He witnessed and participated in the Civil Rights Movement.  He played the drums at numerous events, but the most memorable ones were when he shared the stage with his son William on trumpet.  As he watched his grandchildren grow, he would come to be known as Pa Pa, and was convinced they were each capable of being President of something someday.  His annual 4th of July cookouts gave his family and friends time to stop and appreciate each other.  When he wasnâ??t supporting his beloved President Barack Obama, he was sitting in front of that television, waiting to catch a glimpse of his son playing in the Redskin band, learning Spanish, or watching baseball.Â

He was a genuinely good and decent person, and will be deeply missed.
