Obituary

Clarence Edward (Sonny) Robinson, 80, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at Beacon Place in Greensboro, NC after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2016, at Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 8609 Hwy 119 S, Mebane, NC 27302. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home Chapel, 909 E. Market Street, Greensboro, NC, on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Sonny (as he was lovingly called by most who knew him) was born in Guilford County to the late Clarence Fuller Robinson and Leona Holt Robinson. He and his brother Toye grew up in Gibsonville, NC. He graduated from Sedalia High School. Sonny met and married the love of his life, Cora Bigelow Robinson in 1961. She preceded him in death after fifty years of marriage. Sonny worked for Burlington Mills before becoming employed by Lorillard in Greensboro. He later became part owner and operator of Shaw's Service Station on East Market Street. Afterward, he was employed by NCA&T State University in the Physical Plant as a plumber, eventually becoming head plumber. He retired from A&T after 25 years of service. While there, he received numerous awards and recognitions, including the distinguished Governor's Award. During his earlier years, he often spent his spare time at Piedmont Drag Strip where he sometime raced his race car. He loved fast cars and racing and after his illness was satisfied if he could find a race to watch on TV. He was a faithful member of Sweet Gum Grove Missionary Baptist Church and was often the first to arrive on Sunday mornings. The members at Sweet Gum loved him dearly. Sonny wore the smile that life gave him and attracted many faithful and enduring friendships. Before his health began to fail, there were few days that he did not spend with his many friends whom he had met at Bimco Plumbing Supply. In addition to his devoted brother Toye (Kathy), he is also survived by a loving half-brother Jackie (Anna Maria) Robinson; both of Sedalia, NC; three additional half-brothers: Johnny, James, and Joseph Robinson; and one half-sister, Joanne Robinson, all of Greensboro, NC; sister-in-law and caregiver, Faye Thorne (Jerry), sisters-in- law Jane Sellars (Walter, who was also his devoted caregiver), Hazel Hart all of Greensboro, Barbara Mebane and Evelyn Walker of Burlington, NC, and Eunice Scott of Sedalia, NC; brother-in-law Clay Bigelow of Mebane, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Perry J. Brown Funeral Home, 909 E. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401 is assisting the family.
