Lee, Jr., Officiating~Reflections~Mr. Charles Alexander Whiteside, son of the late Alexander and Sylvia Whiteside, was born on March 2, 1934 in Greensboro, North Carolina and went home to embrace his heavenly father on Saturday, October 13, 2012. He was united in holy matrimony forty-four (44) years to Ruth Jarrell Whiteside who preceded him in death. To this union were born four (4) children. Charles was a graduate of James B. Dudley High School and was on the 1951 and 1952 Championship Football Teams. He was a member of the United States Navy until he received his Honorable Discharge on November 22, 1961. After the military, he started a career in the grocery business with the Colonial Stores, where he was awarded many Certificates of Service, Employee of the Month and Outstanding Performance Awards. He was amongst the first African American Produce Managers in the Colonial Stores Incorporated which later became Big Star Grand Union Company.Charles was promoted to Store Manager of the Big Star Grocery Store on 605 Asheboro Street in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1972, and again was amongst the first African American Store Managers in the country. He was awarded a certificate of Service for 30 consecutive years with the Colonial Stores, Big Star Incorporated and retired in the year 2000 from Food Lion, Inc. He was a deacon at St. James Baptist Church for over 50 years. Charles leaves to cherish his loving memories: sons: Retired Captain Darryl A. Whiteside-United States Air Force of Providence Village, Texas, Colonel Dwayne A. Whiteside of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina-United States Marine Corps, Dashawn L. Whiteside of Dallas, Texas and daughter: Debra Whiteside McLean of Greensboro, North Carolina.Also, daughter-in-law: Priscilla Lee Whiteside of Providence Village, Texas and Verona Whiteside of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; son-in-law: Edward â??Eddie Macâ?? McLean, Jr. of Greensboro, North Carolina; grandchildren: Technical Sergeant Ezra O. Whiteside (Jamilah) United States Air Force of Travis Air Force Base, California, Etra Whiteside McKinney (Gregory) of Frisco, Texas, Brandon, Byron and Bryanna McLean of Greensboro, North Carolina, Coleign and Eaan Whiteside of Greensboro, North Carolina and Lamonte Whiteside of Greensboro, North Carolina; great grandchildren, Halim, Kaleb and Elysia Whiteside of Travis Air Force Base, California, Trinity and Haven McKinney of Frisco, Texas; brother-in-law, Mr. Robert â??Frankâ?? Jarrell of Liberty, North Carolina, Mr. William â??Pee Weeâ?? Jarrell of Portland, Oregon; his very special friend, Mrs. Mary Anne Scarlette of Greensboro, North Carolina, many nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives and friends.
