On Friday, October 27,2017 Mr. Charles E. Robinson transitioned to eternal life. The beloved Charles was born on August 8, 1934 in Society Hill, South Carolina to the late Ladison David Robinson, Sr. and Elizabeth James Robinson. He lived a full life and served as a guiding presence in the lives of many. Charles was a graduate of James B. Dudley High School, Class of 1952. In 1955, he met Elizabeth Barksdale at community dance. He loved gospel and old school R&B music. He was a smooth dancer and literally swept Elizabeth off her feet. They married in 1957 and in their 59 years together they were blessed with four children: Wayne, Michael, Michelle and Lisa. Charles had a great love of family and enjoyed being with his grand and great grandchildren: Blake & Saint Malachi, Holland & Johanna Robinson; Lauryn, Loreal & Mason, and Cary Harper. He lovingly shepherded Elizabeth through a prolonged illness and bared witness to her passing on September 6, 2016. In addition to being an extraordinary husband and father, Charles is noted for his 39 years at Lorillard Tobacco Company. For over 15+ years he served as the Vice President of the Local 317 with the Lorillard Tobacco Company's Union where he helped to negotiate favorable policies for factory workers. He was active in the Greensboro's NAACP, the A. Philip Randolph Civil Rights Movement and assisted numerous democratic political campaigns with a focus on organizing for minority voting issues. Many Greensboro citizens will remember him for canvassing their neighborhoods with election pamphlets and his passion to unite the underrepresented. He was devoted to his home neighborhood on Bothwell Street and was president of the Neighborhood Watch Community for many years. Charles worked hard throughout his life, but he knew how to have a good time. For 28 years he served as the President of Lorillard's Social Club called The Daring Twenties. They attended A&T University games, sailed five cruises, traveled to various sporting resorts and celebrated life's accomplishments. In addition to politics, Charles loved sports. He was known for his athletic skills in the baseball, basketball, pool and golf. His knowledge of sports led him to informally coach and encourage many to accomplish their best with their God-given talents. Charles used the sporting examples of discipline, teamwork and honor to teach others how to have a strong work ethic and achieve stability in their personal lives. Before committing himself to counseling and being a Deacon at New Millennium Christian Center, Charles served on the Finance Committee and Trustee Board at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. His work in the church and community included his ability to offer advice and guidance with warmth and a smile. God gifted Charles with the ability to tell a joke, coach someone through a rough patch and leave everyone with a smile. His sure words of encouragement no matter what challenges were present will hopefully provide all who will miss him with comfort in the days ahead: 'It's going to be a good day!' Left to cherish his memory are Charles & Elizabeth's children: Wayne (Renee), Michael (Paula), Michele (Laurie) and Lisa; his grand and great grandchildren: Blake & Saint Malachi, Holland & Johanna Robinson; Lauryn, Loreal & Mason, and Cary Harper; a cherished sister Madeline Robinson; many nieces and nephews, his special brother-in-law Archie Barksdale, sister-in-law Gladys Robinson and a host of other loving relatives and friends. A service honoring his life will be held at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church; 408 Martin Luther King Jr, Drive, Greensboro, NC 27406 on Friday, November 3, 2017. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Maplewood Cemetery; 235 Bingham Street, Greensboro, NC 27401.
