Cecil T Solomon, the third child in a family of eight siblings, was born in Jamaica, West Indies. After his mother, Jane died at a young age, he helped his Dad to care for his siblings. That caring attitude continued throughout his entire life, and several of his nieces and nephews will tell you that he was their favorite uncle.
Cecil attended public schools in Jamaica, joined the workforce there and then emigrated to New York, USA. His first job was at New York Medical Center. After he married the love of his life, Julia Richardson, they moved to North Carolina. There he graduated from Harris Barber College and became a US Government Barber at Camp LeJune in Jacksonville, N.C. Subsequently, he owned and operated a a Community Barber Shop in Greensboro, NC. There he became president of the Piedmont Barbers Association for 5 years.
As a continuous learner with entrepreneurial tendency, who wanted to provide for his family, Cecil took courses in Business Management and Real Estate at GTCC and managed his own real estate properties as a Landlord for 37yrs. He always gave back to his community. He was a member of the Human Relations Commission, helped with scholarship fundraising, voter registration and transported voters to the polls. Soon after he was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer he started encouraging his clients to do Prostate Screening (age appropriate, of course).
Since 1963, Cecil has been member of Trinity AME Zion church. He was a class leader, a member of the Men's Progressive and January Clubs. He represented his church as a delegate to the Civil Rights March On Washington, DC on August 28, 1963. They travelled all night on the bus which took Bennett College students and other people to the march. As a member of the NAACP, Cecil remained active in the Civil Rights Movement.
A lifelong goal of Cecil was to become a Mason, and he made it to the top. That Organization hosted a ceremony here for him this morning.
Cecil and his wife Julia, exemplified family life and family values. He leaves behind, his wife of almost 70 years, children Cynthia Whittington, Reginald Solomon, and Monica Bent, 5 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and 1 great, great grandchild. Other survivors are several nieces and nephews and brother, Harry, who resides in Philadelphia with his wife, Letheia.
The family extends sincere appreciation for the many acts of kindness shown to the family. Special thanks to his caregiver, Anita, as well as other members of the medical community, and his church family. Thanks to you all for helping us to say goodbye to Cecil.
A service honoring his life will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Trinity A.M.E. Zion; 631 E Flordia St. Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12 noon.
