Mrs. Catherine Williams passed away on June 29, 2022. A service honoring her life will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 12 Noon at Collins Grove United Methodist Church, 5210 Collins Grove Church Road, Greensboro, NC. Visitation will begin at 11:30 am.
Catherine Bryant Williams departed this life peacefully on June 29, 2022, at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, North Carolina, with loved ones at her side. Born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on March 26, 1929, to the late Ozelle and Hattie Bryant. She had one younger sister, Barbara Bryant Wiggins, deceased. Their parents died before Catherine was 5 yrs old and they were raised by their grandparents Fonnie and Elizabeth Thurman; they soon learned to call them Mom and Pop. In the summers she would go to Somerville, New Jersey to spend time with her other grandparents, Urious and Annis Bryant.
She attended Lincoln Elementary School in New Brunswick, New Jersey and went on to graduate from New Brunswick High School in 1948. With her sense of style and fashion she enrolled in beautician school, there she received her license to "fry & dye" and "press & curl" some hair.
In 1952, she married the late Charles Lee Williams in Newark, New Jersey. It was there that they settled and purchased a home together on Hedden Terrace, in 1957. Two daughters were born, Linda Marie Williams (Harrison) and Irene Elizabeth Williams.
Catherine worked as a nurse's aide at Newark Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, New Jersey for 12 years. Seeking a career change she began working in the Newark school system as a teacher's aide. During her evenings, she attended Essex County Community College part-time. Later, she transferred to Rutgers University and graduated in 1978 with a BS degree in Education. She planted her teaching roots at Queen of Angels Elementary School in Newark, New Jersey, teaching 2nd and 3rd grade. She nurtured many young and eager minds for over 13 years until she retired. After becoming a widow, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida to be near her eldest daughter. In 2006, they all packed up and moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. Her faith in God guided her to join Collins Grove United Methodist Church. There she was able to worship God and fellowship with friends.
Catherine was the matriarch of her family, the wise one, the source of family facts, a walking dictionary of family data. She told it like it was, didn't hold back and made no apologies. She was known for telling stories to anyone who would listen. She was our everything: fearless, kind, loving, giving, strong and adorable. We will forever be grateful for the longevity of her life because it allowed us to learn from her and to love her for so many years. #93
Mrs. Williams is survived by her daughters; Linda and son-in-law John Harrison, Irene Williams (Cedrick); grandchildren Crystal Cobb, Aisha Harrison, David Harrison (Antoinette), Amanda Williams; five great-grandchildren Peyton Arnold, Cameron Arnold, Harper Harrison, Kason Harrison, Onyx Penny.
