Catherine McGibbony Kinsey, 92, passed Tuesday, August 30, 2016 at Hospice Greensboro. Catherine was born in the East White Oak community in Greensboro, North Carolina, and is a life-long resident of Guilford County. She worked tirelessly in the field of nursing for more than five decades. She earned her R.N. at Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing, and continued her nursing studies at North Carolina A&T State University where she graduated with a B.S. in Nursing. Catherine has been described as a "vigorous volunteer" who exertedtremendous energy in every activity in which she was involved. She was a member of the Commission on the Status of Women, Nursing Home Advisory Committee, NAACP and the Democratic Party, Lady Sertoma Club, and Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority and numerous other community associations. Catherine was also a faithful member of Providence Baptist Churchwhere she sang in the Sanctuary choir and served as Director of the Children's choir. She was a member of the Philathea Circle and Community Service Guild, chairperson of the Medical Team and Church Courtesy Committee, and Coordinator of Christian Fellowship Hour. Catherine received a number of awards and recognitions. She was recipient of the 1994 Hayes-Taylor Citizen and Service Growth Award, 1994 African-American Atelier Women of Distinction, 1993 Prudential Community Champions Award, and the 1992 Regional Sertoma of the Year. Catherine is survived by her daughter, Roberta Faye Thorpe; granddaughters, Tonja E. Thorpe and Crystal Thorpe Davis; and a host of relatives, friends, and colleagues. A service honoring her life will be held at Providence Baptist Church;1106 Tuscaloosa Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406 on Saturday, September 3, 2016. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. The interment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 N Ohenry Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27405.
