Rogers, 110 years old, was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, on September 29, 1902 to the late Mary Norman. Her mother and late stepfather, William Marbry raised her. She was the oldest of twelve (12) children. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings and three (3) husbands.Carrie moved to Greensboro in the thirties, when she was a young lady. She found a job doing day work and taking care of children. She always loved children and enjoyed her job.She later met Anthony Young, who she married in the forties. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, planting flowers, cooking and fishing. Her favorite foods were collard greens, cabbage, green beans, buttermilk, sweet potato and peach pie. In the mornings she would have a little peach preserves and butter on her bread. Her favorite parts of the chicken were the back, livers and gizzards. She was always choosey about what she ate.In 1945 she joined and was baptized in the East Market Street Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was very active in church. She served as an usher, deaconess, community service worker, senior choir member, charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Church, Widows Circle Golden Age Society, and the Educational Cultural Society. Her favorite color was blue and her favorite song was Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross. Her grandfather and uncle were the love of her life. She said they spoiled her and always protected her when they were around. She enjoyed spending a week with the family at revival time. Carrie credits her longevity to serving God, living right and eating right.She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters: Mary Rucker (Jonathan) of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Clementine Braggs (Karl) of Grand Prairie, Texas; son: Terry Sherrod of Newport News, Virginia; five (5) grandchildren; one (1) great grandchild; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.
