Major Bobbie Eugene Chavis was born in Wadesboro, NC on April 21, 1935 to George and Bessie Chavis. After completing high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1956 after which he enrolled at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. On October 11, 1960, Bobbie was joined in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Shirley Temple Canada of Rich Square, NC. While attending NCA&TSU, he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. . Upon graduation he received a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in 1960 and served many duty stations that included two tours in Vietnam, Hawaii, and Germany. He retired on July 1, 1978 having received many honors and awards during his time of service. Upon retirement as Major from the U.S. Military, he worked for NCA&TSU as the Chief of Security and then for the United States Postal Service until he retired on July 31, 1997. Bobbie was well known in 'Aggieland' as a fond supporter of Aggie football and many sports teams. He represented true 'Aggie Pride!'. He also enjoyed daily visits sharing meals with friends at Williams Cafeteria and encouraging students in their studies and future endeavors. One of his favorite pastimes was fellow-shipping at Gillespie Golf Course with friends known as the 'Tree Boys'. Yet, his main passion in life was to support his sons and their families, especially his grandchildren by instilling life lessons and offering encouragement. He was a great supporter by following his grandsons' sports teams and granddaughter's cooking expos and swimming lessons as well as ballet. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Walter Wahl, George Chavis, John Chavis, Charles Chavis, and sisters Dorothy Cook and Gwendolyn Chavis. Bobbie leaves to cherish his legacy: his beloved wife, Shirley Canada Chavis; his two sons, Bobbie Eugene Chavis, Jr. (Inda) of Kernersville, NC, and John Anthony Chavis (Toni) of Houston, TX; three grandchildren, Joshua Anthony Chavis (Raquel) of Simpsonville, SC, Quentin Michael Chavis (addison) of Phoenix, AZ, and Harper Gabrielle Chavis of Houston, TX; brother and sister in-laws; Daniel T. Canada (Ethleen), William Canada (Janice), Isaac Canada, Georgia Pierce, Doris Jamison, and Waltrene Canada, along with a host of nieces and nephews. A service honoring his life will be held on Friday January 3, 2020, at the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home; 909 E. Market St. Greensboro, NC. Service will begin at 11am.
