Born in McCormick, S. C. in 1933, she has been a resident of Columbus, Ohio since May 2000. Previously, she lived in Greensboro N.C. and Washington, D.C., where she lovingly raised her family. She retired from Burlington Industries as a Lab Technician. Bertha dedicated her life to raising her six (6) children and touching the lives of her twenty-six (26) grandchildren and great grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was an avid reader and collector of books, especially by Stephen King and Dean Koontz. As a mother, grandmother and a friend, Bertha was known best for her quick wit and wise counsel. She is preceded in death by: Paul D. Hawkins Sr.,(husband); Josephine S. Alston (mother); William Alston (step-father); Oâ??Neil Searles (brother); Andrew Searles (father).Surviving relatives include: Phillip J. Hawkins (son) and wife Tonya of Greensboro, N.C.; Paul David Hawkins Jr.(son), and wife Danielle of Raleigh N.C.; Kurtis W. Scott (son) and wife Jewel of Hampton Va; Tracy A. Scott (daughter) of Fuquay Varina, N.C., Donna A. (Scott) James (daughter) and husband Larry of Columbus, Ohio; Keith T. Scott (son) and wife Margaret of Greensboro, N.C.; W. T. Searles (brother) and wife Sherby, of Cleveland, Ohio; Donna (Alston) Williams (sister) and husband Jay of Greensboro, N.C.; William and Carrie Ford (uncle and aunt) of Columbus, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and great grand- children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
