Obituary

ALLEN RALPH SMITH, SR. GREENSBORO Allen Ralph Smith, Sr. left this earth for his final journey to be with the Lord on April 7, 2014 in the comfort of his home with his family close by his side. Allen was born, to Robert Armstead Smith, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Johnson) Smith on May 17, 1954 in Newark, NJ. He was the youngest of three sons. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Smith, Sr. and brother, William 'Billy' Smith. Allen was raised and educated in Newark, NJ and New Castle, PA. During his formative years, he attended Broadway Elementary and Junior High Schools. Later, he attended New Castle High School. Allen resided in Newark, NJ for many years with his parents, brothers and cousins; Bootsie, Jeri, Sunni (preceded in death), and Ivanhoe (Pee Wee). After his marriage to the love of his life, Ruby (Savage), they lived in Newark until they moved to McLeansville, NC, where he lived until God called him home. Allen was employed by FedEx as a courier for 32 years. On December 24, 2012, Allen delivered his last package. He subsequently retired July 16, 2013 from doing what he loved--delivering packages and sharing a 'good word' with customers on his route. Allen was sole proprietor of Mr. Smith's Clothing in Greensboro and Winston-Salem, NC. Allen spent endless hours with his four sons, teaching them the important values of life, instilling good character and the importance of family. He was a good provider and protector. Surviving to cherish Allen's beloved memories are his devoted wife, Ruby, of 40 years; four sons: Al Majied Smith (Alysha) of Charlotte, NC, Allen Smith, Jr. (Tameshius) of Houston, TX., Al Mustafa Smith and Brandon Smith (Dorise) of Greensboro; seven granddaughters: Taylor, Kelis, Calyn, Malaha-Dua, Yomaris, Lotti-Lior, and Addyson. He also leaves to cherish his memory, his mother Mary Smith and a brother Robert 'Majeed' Smith, (Reatha) of East Orange, NJ; a half-brother, Joel Watson of NJ; and two special cousins who were like siblings, Jeri Herron and Floyd Pitman of Atlanta, GA.; mother-in-law Tiny Marie Savage of Decatur, AL; five additional sisters-in-law, Jeffie Abernathy of Raleigh, NC, Eloise Savage, and Kimble Williams (Bill) of Greensboro, Sherry Savage and Lawanda Savage of Decatur, AL, Loretta Savage-Jarmon (Greg)of Atlanta GA; god-daughter, Jasmin; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and a multitude of close friends and co-workers. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, April 11, 2014 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held, April 12, 2014 at Love and Faith Christian Fellowship Church, 4344 Blackberry Road, Greensboro. Visitation will precede the service in the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 2500 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC 27405
